Parker Meadows stood up on Wednesday.
The Tigers center fielder made what easily could be called the catch of the year at T-Mobile Park, helping Detroit pull out the win.
In the eighth inning of his team’s 6-2 win over the Seattle Mariners, Meadows robbed Cal Raleigh of what should have been a home run to deep center. The hit also might have given the Mariners the lead, as Randy Arozarena doubled to right just in front of him and was on second base.
But somehow Meadows found the ball and expertly made the catch as he leaned back against the wall to end the inning there. Watch:
The Tigers also took full advantage of the momentum swing. They scored three runs in the top of the ninth, when Matt Vierling hit an RBI single and Gio Urshela drove in two more with a single to left, pushing Detroit to the four-run win.
Meadows is in his second season with the Tigers. He has a .161 batting average with eight RBI and four home runs in just 37 games with the team.
The Tigers are 55-60 after Wednesday’s win, their second straight victory over the Mariners. They remain firmly in fourth place in the AL Central standings, 12.5 games out of first place in the division and 8.5 games out of the final wild-card spot. The Mariners, at 59-56 on the season, are a half-game behind the Houston Astros in the AL West race.
Seattle, which has lost three games in a row, concludes its three-game series against the Tigers on Thursday.
