A family woke up on the morning of August 3 to find the two cars they had parked in their garage missing. What allowed the thieves to easily steal them was a garage door opener remote that had been left in a third vehicle, a mistake we see criminals exploit all the time. Yet so many people do this.
Watch as thieves steal an Aston Martin from the garage of a residential home.
This theft occurred in Livingston, New Jersey sometime the night before or in the early morning hours. All the suspects had to do was open a Honda that was left unlocked in the driveway and find the garage door opener inside, TAPinto Livingston reports.
Even if you lock your car while it’s parked in the driveway or street in front of your house, it’s a fool’s errand to keep a remote control for your garage door opener inside. Once thieves have it, they can easily get into your garage.
The second mistake the victims made was not locking the door that led from the garage to the house. When the thieves tried that door and realized it was unlocked, they went into the utility room and got the keys to the two drives in the garage, which they stole.
Luckily the suspects did that. The scary thing is that they could have decided to attack the family and do much more.
In this case, police found both stolen vehicles in Newark not long after. We wonder if they had tracking devices that gave the owners their exact location.
It is worth emphasizing that a skilled thief can misuse a garage door opener without the remote control. Therefore, you cannot rely on the opener as a security device and should use the deadbolt on the door leading from the garage to your home.
